Job Title: High-Performance Computer Technician (NWS 00774)
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Computing Directorate has an opening for a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Technician to provide consulting services to the Livermore Computing (LC) user community on some of the world’s largest supercomputers. The successful candidate will work on a broad range of complex, HPC assignments in both classified and unclassified computing environments, have strong problem-solving and HPC skills, exhibit proficient two-way communications, act as a customer advocate and provide technical assistance for customers. Additional technical assignments will also be made based on programmatic need and individual interests or expertise of the individual.
Essential Duties
- Provide technical consulting services by staffing the LC Customer Services Hotline office on a rotating schedule.
- Record, track, correspond, and document resolutions of customer contacts using an incident tracking system. Contact with customers will be via phone, email, and in person.
- Diagnose and resolve a broad range of computing problems and participate in implementing solutions by working closely with LC staff, customers and vendors.
- Work on short-term collaborations to port, profile, optimize and/or trouble-shoot customer codes on new platforms.
- Determine optimal methods for configuring batch jobs to run on various LC HPC systems.
- Provide customer support on the efficient and effective use of HPC and network resources at LC.
- Work on independent projects, such as presenting and processing information from web-based access forms, interfacing with other directorates to ensure the most efficient use of LC computing resources and supporting LC and its customers through other projects as needed.
- Periodically schedule system, software, and other events affecting the LC user community, and effectively communicate these events to customers.
- Some travel for meetings, training, and conferences.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- BS in computer science, or related field, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
- Current and in-depth experience using HPC systems and tools, and knowledge of parallel programming models and techniques.
- Experience with and knowledge of UNIX/Linux, Fortran, C and/or C++ programming languages, and script programming languages (shell, Perl).
- Familiarity with scientific and parallel applications programming.
- Experience providing technical customer support, informally or formally.
- Demonstrated ability to interface and communicate effectively.
- Advanced writing and documentation skills.
- Experience working effectively in a team environment.
Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, or related field.
- Experience using, or in-depth knowledge of, the LC or similar HPC environment.
- Knowledge of network access methods (IPA, VPN, firewalls).
- Knowledge of visualization techniques.
- Teaching and training experience.
- Familiarity with a range of parallel HPC systems.
- Familiarity with GPGPU programming, CUDA or Open ACC.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q
(position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
