Incorporated in 2011, North Wind Resource Consulting’s core capabilities include environmental documentation and permitting; natural and cultural resource surveys; wildlife and botanical expertise; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) technical services; historic and prehistoric surveys; environmental consultation such as Section 106 for cultural resources, Section 404 for wetlands, and Section 7 for endangered species); and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping capabilities. North Wind Resource Consulting maintains offices across the country.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Archaeological Field Director is responsible for leading and supervising field crews in the completion of archaeological surveys and excavation projects. The Field Director will participate in planning and mobilization of projects, systematic recordation of archaeological sites, and preparation of materials for report production following completion of the project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees and directs crews in the location, collection, recordation, and interpretation of archaeological data from survey and excavation projects.
  • Supervises field personnel, which may include in-field training, problem resolution, and performance evaluation.
  • Organizes fieldwork mobilization and demobilization.
  • Ensures completion of projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Communication on a regular basis with the North Wind project manager and field technicians.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participation in project kickoff meetings and project updates.
  • Driving daily to project areas using North Wind vehicle.
  • Maintaining both North Wind and project-specific safety awareness and practices at all times.
  • Participation in North Wind training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or equivalent discipline.
  • 2-3 years of field experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience working in inclement conditions (e.g., heat, rain, rugged terrain, etc.).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Knowledge of basic archaeological field and laboratory procedures, including mapping, photography, and proper artifact handling.
  • Possesses a strong work ethic and developed and mature understanding of professionalism.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively in training field crews.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various field locations, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, often across rugged terrain.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours.
  • Ability and willingness to work in inclement conditions (e.g., heat, rain, rugged terrain, etc.).
  • Ability to follow written and oral instruction, and willingness and desire to learn and ask questions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in anthropology, archaeology, or a related discipline.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Experience and willingness to work in inclement conditions (e.g., heat, rain, rugged terrain, etc.)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Outdoor working environment, occasionally in inclement weather or in locations with rugged or challenging terrain (e.g., hills/mountains, swamps, dense vegetation).
