Incorporated in 2011, North Wind Resource Consulting’s core capabilities include environmental documentation and permitting; natural and cultural resource surveys; wildlife and botanical expertise; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) technical services; historic and prehistoric surveys; environmental consultation such as Section 106 for cultural resources, Section 404 for wetlands, and Section 7 for endangered species); and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping capabilities. North Wind Resource Consulting maintains offices across the country.


POSITION PURPOSE:

The Archaeological Field Technician I position is an entry level position that will be providing in-field analysis and scientific studies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Field Director/Crew Chief in writing detailed daily field notes, taking photographs of artifacts and discoveries, and mapping discovery locations as necessary.
  • Walk across challenging terrain and in inclement conditions (e.g., hot and cold temperatures; windy, snowy, or rainy conditions).
  • Operate GPS for navigation and mapping.
  • Recognize and documenting pre-contact and historic period artifacts, features, and other cultural materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or a closely related field and completion of an accredited field school.
  • One (1) – three (3) years of related work experience in the field.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in shovel testing and performing pedestrian surveys under a variety of field conditions with experience recording prehistoric and historic period archaeological sites of varying complexity.
  • Ability to recognize and document pre-contact and historic period artifacts, features, and other cultural materials.
  • Candidates must have the ability to write detailed daily field notes, take photographs of artifacts and discoveries, and to map discovery locations as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and operate GPS for navigation and mapping.
  • Ability to sketch artifacts to scale desired.
  • Willing and ability to work in a dynamic setting, and to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of North Wind’s commitment to gathering high quality in-field data.

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain at least a DOE “L” clearance
  • Willing to work irregular hours (e.g., early mornings, late nights, weekends)
  • Experience in and willingness to work in inclement conditions (i.e., very hot, windy, sunny without shade)
  • Must be able, by reason of experience, training, or both, to operate a 4-wheel high clearance North Wind vehicle (i.e., truck and/or jeep) to complete the work task(s)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Position will require extensive physical exertion, such as walking up to 10 hours a day at speeds of at least 3 mph over steep, uneven, heavily wooded, challenging terrain.
  • Ability to dig and excavate at least 1 cu meter per day.
  • Candidate must be able to carry up to 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Candidate must be able to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
  • Candidate must be able to work in a variety of conditions such as hot or cold temperatures, rainy, snowy, or windy conditions.
  • Individual must be able to conduct these tasks while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. This work will be performed in remote locations and will include camping.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability and willing to travel to various field locations, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, across rugged terrain
  • Outdoors in varying and often inclement conditions (e.g., heat and cold; rain; etc.).
  • Potential contact with poisonous plants, insects, and animals.
  • Work will be performed in remote locations and will include camping.
