North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management.


POSITION PURPOSE:

The Environmental Scientist conducts field investigations and data collection to obtain quantifiable and trackable information for analysis and reporting. This data is used to determining sources, nature and extent, and risk for management and remediation of contaminates in air, water, and soil. The environmental scientist utilizes knowledge based in geology, biology, engineering principles, and applied technologies to conduct field investigations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect data and samples in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Collects and documents soil, air, and/or water samples to determine presence and quantity of contaminates.
  • Prepares sample for testing, records in situ data, and logs daily activities.
  • Utilize Hand Auger and Little Beaver to collect sub-surface soil samples.
  • Field duties will include Direct Push Technology, Hollow Stem Auger, and Roto-Sonic drilling rig oversight.
  • Office duties include data management and documentation organization.
  • Organize and lead project teams in the successful completion of project tasks.
  • Participate in field efforts as needed to support the successful execution of projects.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education and Experience:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology or other closely related field.
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience working as an Environmental Scientist or similar role.
  • Practical, hands-on experience conducting environmental field work for site characterization and/or remediation projects.
  • Knowledge and experience with various media (e.g., soil, soil vapor, groundwater), contaminants, and standard operating procedures for investigation and corrective action.
  • Experience working on projects for Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, or other federal agencies is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage field projects with extensive customer contact.
  • Able to manage field subcontractors.
  • Analyzing project needs and establishing appropriate project priorities.
  • Analyzing and evaluating technical environmental data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Drive a pick-up truck and/or transit van.

Special Requirements:

  • Extended overnight travel required as needed.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, squat, climb and talk or hear. The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 30lbs. Must be able to hike over rough terrain of potential varying grades while hauling field equipment/supplies. Must be able stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to operate and Hand Auger and varies manual or powered hand tools.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions in all seasons of weather. The noise level in the work environment is normally mild to moderate, but high levels requiring hearing protection should be expected. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles. The employee must be able to stand for long periods and walk across uneven terrain.
