North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Physical & Life Sciences Directorate has an opening within the Fusion Energy Science Division for a Physicist to provide continuity in the LLNL Collaboration on DIII-D. As an expert resource, the successful candidate will aid in developing proposals and guiding changes in emphasis in the Tokamak Research program. The successful candidate will work with both LLNL and DIII-D staff in guiding the overall DIII-D program. The successful candidate will operate LLNL diagnostics during the upcoming (abbreviated) physics run. When necessary, the successful candidate will work with staff that are performing computational modeling of the divertor and Scrape Off Layer (SOL).

Essential Duties
- Act as an expert resource to the LLNL Group Leader and LLNL Collaboration on DIII-D staff during the transitional period with possible new funding arrangements and organization changes.
- When necessary, work with LLNL staff who have DIII-D leadership positions to facilitate new organizational structures in DIII-D and tokamak research.
- Mentor postdocs and new employees in both experimental physics and computational modeling.
- When necessary, operate DIII-D diagnostics that were designed and built by LLNL. Ideally, with minimal training required.
- Help Group Leaders coordinate job assignments of Tokamak Research group.
- Facilitate interactions with new Fusion Energy Section lead and LLNL Fusion Point of Contact.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Detailed knowledge of the DIII-D National Fusion program, including familiarity with current DIII-D and LLNL fusion energy management.
- Detailed knowledge of DIII-D tokamak operations, including experimental planning and execution to guide staff.
- Strong history of facilitating group interactions, both within LLNL and in the broader DIII-D organization which includes collaborators from many institutions.
- Experience with mentoring young staff, familiarity with LLNL staff.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q and SCI (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
